Llucmajor bar owners ‘upset’ over new terrace rates

BAR owners in Llucmajor are ‘upset’ over the new terrace rates. Those in the centre and s’Arenal have not paid anything until now, but as of January 1, 2012, they will have to pay €50 per square metre each year.

“We do not think it is right,” sisters Amanda and Patricia Pina told Spanish newspaper Diario de Mallorca. “Cars pass through the street where our place is and we sometimes have to move tables and clients so that they can pass.

We will not pay for this,” said Amanda. “Here there are not as many people as places by the beach, just those who go outside to smoke,” added Patricia.

Meanwhile, Sergio Gonzales from the Sport bar understands that one “must pay to use the public road, but the price is too high compared the number of clients we get each day.”

Jaume Oliver from the Arabic Bar agrees: “Some bars have calculated they will have to pay between €1,500 and €2,000 a year,” he said. “This comes after a low period with very few clients due to renovation works on the central plaza.”
