NINE illegal immigrants were arrested last week off the coast of Alicante region as they tried to enter Spain, Benidorm Town Hall said in a statement.
The boat carrying the arrested immigrants landed near Villajoyosa, and was known to have had nine occupants. Another boat was sighted at around the same time further north just off Benidorm and was expected to have landed soon after.
Due to the increased number of attempted illegal entries into Spain by (mainly) North Africans, the Guardia Civil have set up a special centre to deal with detention and processing of the arrivals here in the Valencia region.
Since 24 September 4 boats have been caught off Valencia’s coast, and since 2007 40 such craft have been intercepted.
The shift north in the illegal traffic is as a result of increased vigilance on Spain’s more southerly coastline due to years of such incursions, and so now the traffickers, in an attempt to circumvent the Spanish immigration patrols, are journeying farther north to Valencia and as far as Castellon.
