A DOG IS not just for Christmas, as the old adage says but throughout Spain, thousands of Dogs and cats are abandoned every year.
But thanks to a little initiative and the use of social network Facebook, new owners are taking up more and more unwanted pets for adoption.
Carmen Mateo, Torrevieja’s Councillor responsible for Health and the Zoological Centre, announced that more than twenty dogs have been adopted from the Municipal Kennels in the last three months due to the efforts of volunteers who have posted details of various animals on Facebook to raise awareness of the centre.
The Municipal Kennels, or in Spanish the Perrera Municipal de Torrevieja are located close to the Habaneras Shopping Centre and Policia Local in the Toretta area of the city.
The Facebook page contains photographs and stories of all the dogs in the centre, maps to its location and photos posted by some of the people who have adopted a new pet.
Carmen Matero said that “The response from the public has been really surprising, since in no time at all we have had twenty dogs taken up for adoption.”
In addition, the centre has also received donations of all different kinds of equipment such as chains, leads, blankets, towels, houses, and food. The page already has more than 1,500 friends, a number that is rising on an almost hourly basis. The page can be found on Facebook by typing in ‘Perrera Municipal de Torrevieja’ in the search field.
The Department of Health has also launched an information campaign information to raise public awareness about the importance of adopting dogs, especially during this holiday season, including setting up information desks in the Plaza of the Constitution during the weekends.
Anyone interested in adopting a Dog for Christmas should always bare in mind that a dog is for life and not just for the holidays and that these beautiful animals are already house trained, very loveable and juts looking for a new home and loving family, plus a second chance at a new life in a new home.
Visit them on Facebook and maybe find the perfect dog for your family this festive season.
