Torrevieja’s Games Makers for London 2012

LONDON 2012 will be one of the major events this year and Torrevieja can feel a little bit of pride as two local residents will be helping as ‘Games Makers’ at the Olympic event.

When the call went out for 70,000 Volunteers, Jo Rich and her husband David decided to apply, as they knew it would be a unique once in a lifetime experience. Jo and David have lived here in Spain for 4 years and Jo is well known around Torrevieja as she’s a member of ‘The Showgroup Torrevieja’, and the members of the Showgroup are delighted that she has been selected to join the 2012 Olympic support crew.

Jo applied on-line and in April 2010, received a response and a request to attend an interview at Canary Warf, where the ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ auditions are held.

Jo said “They asked questions such as ‘ have you ever gone the extra mile, what are you hobbies & interests’ and why do you want to be a Games Maker?”

Jo and David received the good news in September 2011 that both had been accepted into the program.

Jo will form part of the Families Team; looking after athletes, passing them messages, organising them for the transport coaches, which take them to and from the Stadiums and helping with any other beneficial information.

Husband David will be based at one of the Stadiums as a driver.

His role will be transporting clients and athletes to and from the different venues, more specifically the Javelin & Hammer events. As the time is approaching, both are becoming excited about the games.

There is a Test event planned for the Spring and they have just received notice of their Games Maker Uniform.

In the meantime to keep Jo busy she is performing in the Showgroup’s next production of ‘Paella & Chips’, which is being performed in La Rustika, February 8, 9 and 10.

The show is set in a small Spanish village, where several famous names have retired.

As they try to integrate with the locals by throwing a Valentines party they encounter several problems and after a complete mix up with some fancy dress costumes, followed by a case of mistaken identity, things can only get better!

With it being Valentine’s Week, there is also the traditional Love interest. Jo is busy rehearsing two days a week and has not had much time to think about this summer’s games but hopes that as many people as possible will come and see her in the show as proceeds this year are going to their chosen charity, which for 2012 is Help At Home.

Jo added that “It’s great fun, gives us something to do, raises some money for charity and we new members are always welcome to join us. We are looking for a new director for a summer show.”

Tickets for ‘Paella & Chips’ are available from Jenny 608 129 983 / 966 181 951 and priced at €8.00 with a discount for group bookings of 10 or more.

The doors open at 7.00pm. curtain up 7.30pm. A pre show meal is available, bookings are required and can be made through Suzanne at La Rustika.

Anyone interested in finding out more about Showgroup Torrevieja can visit with them during rehearsals on Wednesdays from 7.00- 9.00pm and Fridays between 2.00- 4.00pm.

Stop by and wish Jo and David all the best for their adventure this summer.
