Premiere of the U3A Musical All Stars

THE Teulada/Moraira U3A ‘Golden Oldies Musicians Group’ hit the San Jaime Ifach Golf Club, with all the verve of a top teenage concert.

With ages ranging from the near 80’s to the 40/50-or-so sprightly young-uns, this new branch of the popular U3A organisation, held a packed audience spellbound in the lounge bar of this long established club for over two entertaining, fast and furious hours.

Organised by John Hopwood from an idea by Javea U3A member Ruud Maarsman, the concert featured over 22 amateur acts.

Each act presented their particular brands of music that ranged from Boogie-woogie to pure folk, Blues to show hits, Spanish to bar songs and a jazz ensemble to the Golden Oldies Big Band – and except for a couple of backing tracks – it was live music all the way.

There were so many ‘hits’ during the show, that it would be completely unfair to single any particular artists out of the talented pack, but I think all those who were privileged to attend this premiere performance, would agree that one of the most sensitive and touching performances of the evening was that of the vocalist simply listed in the programme as June.

Not a dry eye in the house.

A lot of work went on behind the scenes to make this musical dream come true and I sincerely hope this is the start of a regular series of what I shall call, The U3A Musical All Stars. Amongst those taking part.: Mike Lawson, Anna Gabriel, Paul Wessendorf, Andy Keen, Paul Roberts, Laurence Baehr, June Ward, Ian McKenzie, Pam Dentith, Des Pais, Ruud Maarsman, Stella maarsman, John Hopwood.
