APPROXIMATELY €200,000 of takings in taxes and fees has disappeared from Estepona council’s accounts.
As a precautionary measure, the council treasurer was removed from his post.
A female Treasury department employee is also under investigation.
Money was found to be missing after €1,527.30 from fees paid for courses last February was handed over by the Culture department.
In the presence of witnesses, the Treasury worker assured the Culture employee that a record had been made of the payment.
A receipt would be sent to her department, she told her.
No trace of this payment or several others could later be found by the council auditors, who informed the mayor, Jose Maria Garcia Urbano shortly afterwards.
An enquiry is under way.
