INVASIVE SPECIES: The Monk Parakeet, also known as the Quaker Parrot
NINETY-ONE nests of the invasive species ‘Monk Parakeet’ were ordered by town hall to be taken down this year from trees in Malaga to keep the birds’ population under control and to avoid the nests falling and harming pedestrians.
This parrot originates from the temperate to subtropical areas of Argentina and the surrounding countries in South America. Self-sustaining feral populations occur in many places, mainly North America and Europe, namely Spain, Gibraltar, Belgium and the UK. Some fear they will harm crops and native species in areas where they have been introduced.
