MARBELLA’S rubbish collectors have planned to go on strike on August 16 and 18. The decision was made during a recent employee assembly. According to RSU (Solid Urban Residue) company workers, they have decided to protest against town hall’s resolution to make them work 35 hours a week instead of 37.5 as the Government had established for urban cleaning workers. This reduction will make RSU employees give up 19 days off they are now entitled to. Union members are also worried that the measure will also justify employee cuts given that the fewer hours will require fewer workers.
These same workers signed a €339 salary reduction to avoid lay offs in July. However, RSU employees stated that the problem is that their labour rights are being suppressed more than other government collectives and not that they will be paid less.
