REALITY TV STAR: Kay Frances with her partner, Tony.
STARRING in as television reality programme is fun, as Kay Frances can now vouch. Early in May Kay received a phone call, followed by an email from ITV researchers in the UK who had seen her home on the Owners Direct website and thought it would be ideal for a Spanish episode of ‘May The Best House Win’ which was being planned.
After first dismissing the idea, Kay and Tony decided publicity could be good for future rentals, so she replied and said they would go ahead. Kay then had to be interviewed, and by that time they advertisements had been placed locally for people to take part.
More than 500 replies were received. Finally Kay and three others were chosen; Matthew from Sorbas with a new-build four-bedroom house; Sharon from Cantoria with a old cortijo renovation on the edge of a beautiful valley; Sue, with a luxury villa in San Juan, and Kay and Tony with a spacious villa in Antas.
The filming started with each in turn visiting each other’s houses over three days. At the end each houseowner then entertained the other three and offered entertainment.
Kay, a singer in the Levante area, gave a personal rendition of Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, and although a little nervous of appearing before a television audience of millions, left with her dignity intact.
Though filming was heavily edited given the length of programmes, the show included beautiful shots of the area including Mojacar pueblo and the coast. The experience was ‘phenomenal,’ said Kay, who finished joint first with Sue
