A TUNNEL is to connect the new Ikea with San Vicente del Raspeig.
Improved access to its location in the Rabasa area on the outskirts of Alicante was one of the conditions for ministry of Public Works’ permission.
The tunnel was taken into account by Rabasa developer Enrique Ortiz when drawing up plans for the neighbourhood, although its exact location has yet to be decided.
Despite the planned tunnel, traffic to and from Ikea, known for its flat-packed self assembly furniture, will still saturate roads in the area, the PSOE opposition party predicted.
The EU party also criticised the reversal of an earlier ruling that prevented the big retail chains and supermarkets from opening premises adjoining Ikea.
The decision to allow them deals another blow to small business owners, a spokesman claimed.
