CIRCLE OF LIFE: Dogs simply want comfort
WONDER why a dog moves in circles before laying down? Pet dogs will circle anywhere indoors, even in their own beds to mark their scent so they can return to the same place.
It’s not reasoned behaviour, but is instinctive to all canines, domesticated and other. A common theory is that wild dogs chose to sleep with their nose blowing into the prevailing wind, circling to figure out which way that was. And to ensure there were no snakes or other enemies.
Also, dogs circle to find the most comfortable position. Most dogs don’t like to lay on a flat surface, which is why they sometimes paw at the same area before settling down.
