Distinctive: Alicante’s olive oil
OLIVE Oil is traditionally associated with Andalucia, but Alicante province produces some of the best.
This was also the unanimous verdict from thousands of intrigued visitors at a recent trade fair in Santander.
Although the fair centred on products from the Cantabria region, Alicante products were also featured, including organic olive oil created by a provincial producer.
All the olives used for the virgin extra oil comes from trees growing in the Campo de Mirra in inland Alicante. It is then processed on site before distribution throughout Spain.
The thousands who visited the fair were keen to sample the province’s distinctive oil and all pronounced it excellent. The oil is also available in aromatic versions featuring local fruit as well as herbs native to Sierra de Mariola. These include rosemary, thyme, pebrella (savoury) and peppers, as well as garlic and chilli.
