PERU was named Best Culinary Destination 2012 at the World Travel Awards, held in New Delhi (India).
Amongst the nominees were China, Thailand, Japan, Mexico, Malaysia, the USA, Italy and France.
This is the 20th year that the prize has been handed out and there were 800,000 votes received from experts in gastronomy from more than 170 countries.
One of Peru’s most renowned chefs is Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, the owner of Malabar, in San Isidro. Others are Virgilio Martínez of Restaurante Central in Lima, and Gaston Acurio, who runs a chain of establishments called Astrid & Gaston present in Peru, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Panama, Spain, Mexico, Argentina and soon to open in the UK.
