A YEAR without sex or the ability to speak English?
More than half of residents in the Valencian Community unhesitatingly replied that they would prefer to be able to speak good English.
That was the shock result of a survey by the Cambridge University Press, which questioned 1,700 Spaniards aged between 18 and 60 about attitudes towards learning English.
Despite the surprising overall result for the English v Sex quandary in the Valencia region, a snap poll of Alicantinos by a local television channel received very different answers.
When asked which they would prefer, not one of those interviewed – young and not so young – chose English over sex.
All agreed that they would very much like to speak English well. But as one young woman explained: “I want to speak English, but I wouldn’t want to give up sex.”
Spain would overcome the economic crisis more quickly if Spaniards spoke better English, 63 per cent of people told the survey. And a further 85 per cent believed that exports would improve because businesses would find it easier to sell their own products as well as Spain’s brand image.
