RONDA: One of the historic bridge walls has been damaged
WORK has begun on Ronda’s best-known monument, the Puente Nuevo.
One of its walls was damaged when a vehicle crashed into it, and will have to be taken down and replaced. The crash was so severe that one of the balconies of the bridge which is used as a viewpoint has had to be closed. However, the structure has not been damaged.
The work, which was inspected by municipal technicians, had to be authorized by the Junta de Andalucia Culture Department based on their reports and will cost some €7,000.
It is somewhat complex as there is a nothing to one side of the wall making it difficult to manage the huge stones of which it is made. It should be completed within 10 days, weather permitting. While the stones are not in place, one lane will be closed to traffic.
The mayor, Mari Paz Fernandez, has requested a survey to determine the general condition of the bridge.
