Rum bunch

ONE very famous Spaniard who did like the British was Jorge Juan y Santalices (1713-1773). His achievements in natural science, humanitarianism, exploration and naval expertise, are far too numerous to mention here.

He liked the British foe so much that he spied against them on behalf of the Spanish Crown. The wily chap coveted Britain’s shipbuilding expertise. Such was his chutzpah that he recruited British shipbuilders to design and build Spanish ships later used against the British Crown forces.  Because the French did not follow his example, they lost the Battle of Trafalgar, so it is said.  What a rum bunch we all are.
