Patients come first
WHILST the patient may always come first, the 25 care workers at the Bartolome Sanchez Moreno old people’s home in Oria are rapidly running out of patience.
Urban Geriatric SL, the management company contracted to run the home by the Ministry of Health and Welfare has not paid the staff for eight months, apart from a €500 one-off gesture at Christmas, blaming cash flow problems.
Dedicated members of staff are reluctant to jeopardise the comfort of the elderly and infirm, but on lawyer’s advice have decided to call a strike later this month, arguing that they can no longer pay their mortgages or utility bills or even feed their families.
Acknowledging that it is in arrears with payment to the private contractor, the Office of Health and Welfare has confirmed that it has not paid the private sector contractor for five months.
The 45 bed home accommodates both the elderly and seniors with serious behavioural problems.
