Call for Spanish king to abdicate in favour of his son

The leader of the Catalan Socialist Party, (PSC) Pere Navarro, has asked King Juan Carlos to abdicate in favor of his son Prince Felipe.

The PSC leader said that if the king does not abandon the throne, many people might start to think that the whole democratic monarchy system itself needs changing.

Navarro said, ‘He has been a good king, he was a key figure in the Transition of the 1970s and 1980s, and the majority of Catalans and Spaniards appreciate his work’.

Admitting that his comments might seem controversial to some people, Navarro said that Prince Felipe could play a significant role in the profound changes Spain needs, insisting that the monarchy needs to ‘modernize and accept the rules of transparency demanded by the public nowadays.’

This comes at a time when the Spanish royal family is going through very difficult times. While Spain was suffering from the government’s austerity measures and unemployment, the king went to Botswana on a hunting trip, for which he later had to apologise.

More recently, the king’s son-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin, has been implicated with his former business partner Diego Torres in a criminal case allegedly involving the siphoning off of public funds.
