A young football referee was seriously attacked by another player during a football match.
The 17 year old youth has had his spleen removed after being savagely beaten by a National Police officer attached to the riot squad of the public safety unit.
The assault took place during a match between two teams from the Valencia region second division. Giner, the referee, blew his whistle against the 27 year old policeman for a foul, and then produced a red card when he began to insult him.
The policeman then punched the referee to the ground and kicked him in the ribs several times. Other players tried to protect him but it was too late and his spleen was ruptured.
The police officer was arrested later the same day on charges of aggravated assault. He was bailed to appear in court and faces disciplinary charges. He has also been dismissed from the the football club Mislata.
