Cardinals elect the 266th pontiff
Our new Pope is named as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina. The 266th pontiff of the Catholic Church. He will be known as Pope Francis l.
He is the first pope to hail from the Americas and he will replace Benedict XVl who stood down from his position last month due to health reasons.
WHITE smoke appeared out of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City this evening signaling that a new Pope had been elected to lead the Catholic Church.
St.Pauls Square filled up with thousands of people who cheered at the symbolic smoke signals that mark that a successor to Benedict XVI has been selected after two days of voting.
The new Pope appeared on the balcony of St.Peter’s Basilica at 7pm GMT time in front of the huge crowd who stood patiently under umbrellas.
A mass celebration is due to take place all over the world to celebrate this monumental occasion.
