Roquetas dustmen are set to strike
THE dustbin men in Roquetas are going on strike.
Garbage collectors working for Urbaser will withdraw their labour indefinitely starting on Sunday (March 24). Under new working proposals they stand to lose in the region of €3,500 a year salary, and their employers are unwilling to make concessions.
In a press release, a union spokesman commented: “In various meetings the management of Urbaser has reduced salaries by 13 per cent, increased the working hours, and eliminated overtime.”
According to their spokesman, Raul Fuentes, the management is also failing to fill vacancies, thus increasing the workload on the refuse operatives. In this respect he stated that the cuts are “totally unjustified, especially as Urbaser are charging €1.4 million more for street cleaning and waste collection than it did in 2012.”
The stoppage has been strategically planned to coincide with the Easter holiday and the anticipated influx of tourists to the popular resort.
