Video reveals teacher attacking pupil in Melilla school

AN investigation was launched after a video revealed a teacher attacking a pupil at a school in Spain’s North African enclave of Melilla.

The centre is a state school dependent upon the Moroccan Ministry of Education, the Moroccan Muslims’ Student Residence, which has existed since the 60s in the centre of Melilla. Pupils and teachers come into Melilla from Morocco every day to the school, where it has long been rumoured that less studious children are subjected to slight physical violence.

However, a video taken by a pupil reveals that at least one teacher goes way beyond a smack with a ruler to the hands and feet reported by former pupils.

The video shows a child of nine or 10 being hit by the teacher with a stick while he screams and cries and attempts to escape. His classmates watch in horror, and one of them was brave enough to take a video, based on which a police investigation has been launched. The teacher has been identified, but so far, no arrests have been made.

The Spanish Ministry of Education has no jurisdiction over the school, which is open to children in Melilla who cannot legally attend Spanish state schools.
