THREE people were arrested at Barajas airport as they tried to smuggle cocaine through Customs.
The luggage belonging to the trio – two women and a man – who had flown from Lima (Peru) contained 55 kilos of clothes impregnated with the drug, police sources revealed.
The suitcases were checked in with the names of the women, while the male accompanied them to ensure that the drugs reached their intended destination, police said.
Days earlier, a Barajas anti-drugs unit arrested five people bringing in 13 kilos of cocaine hidden in shampoo samples, shoe insoles and suitcases with false bottoms.
Last year, 398 people – 292 men and 106 women – were arrested at the airport on smuggling charges, according to police statistics. Most of the drugs impounded during these operations were from Latin America, they said.
