Red cross volunteer saved baby
RED CROSS volunteers at the Fira de Ram fair have been praised after saving a baby that was choking to death.
The mother of a three month old baby was travelling in a car when she noticed the baby had stopped breathing and had started to turn blue.
A friend in the car told the mother there was a Red Cross unit stationed at the nearby fair on the Son Fuster (Palma) industrial estate.
The woman crossed the roundabout and was seen running and crying out loud that her baby was dying. The quick actions of the Red Cross team saved the day.
One of the volunteers, a 23 year veteran of the organisation known only as Javier, quickly turned the baby over and patted it on the back until the blockage was cleared.
It turned out the baby was choking on its own mucus that had built up. The baby fell asleep in his arms.
The baby and mother were transferred to Son Espases hospital (Palma) where the baby arrived in perfect condition, but the mother was treated for anxiety and shock.
