Rugby heaven in the Balearics

Baleares U19 try against Ukraine.

IT was a perfect weekend for rugby lovers in the Balearics with a string of events. From the youngsters playing fun games for charity, the first match for the Girls Baleares Selection team, to the weekend long European U19 7’s Grand Prix Series, there was plenty to watch.

Saturday lunchtime saw the first match for the Baleares Selection Girls Team played in sunny conditions in Son Caliu against a visiting team from Gerona.

The teams were very well matched and although at times G.E.I.G. showed superior passing skills and some good speed with the ball, the local girls kept up very well. 

The Baleares Selection showed that they could become a formidable team in the future. The final score was 40 points to 45 to the visitors but it was a hard fought match with both sides tackling hard for possession of the ball. 

Sunday saw the youngsters take over the pitch in Son Caliu in a tournament to raise funds for UNICEF. €1,000 was handed over to UNICEF at the end of the tournament.

For a different style of rugby Magaluf Athletics Stadium was the place to be where the European U19  7`s Grand Prix Series was hosted over the weekend.

Twelve countries from around Europe competed in the first of this series sponsored by Société Générale.  Players from Portugal, France, Spain, Russia, Ukraine, Italy, Germany, Romania, Belgium, Lithuania, Poland and Monaco arrived on the island during the week and took advantage of the facilities in the nearby Magaluf Sports Centre and the pitch at Son Caliu. France beat Russia in the final, 55 – 12 having not lost a match whilst, Spain beat Belgium, 15 – 12 in the closing minutes of the match to take third place in front of packed stands.
