GASTROXABIA: Javea mayor Jose Chulvi (fourth from right) and the Fair organisers.
GASTROXABIA makes its debut this coming weekend with the first Javea Coca Fair. The fair organised by Xabiaidea, regional newspaper Las Provincias and backed by Javea town hall, is a further initiative to attract visitors during the low season.
The fair will be held at the Riurau de l’Arnauda where a traditional oven has been built to bake the cocas. Visitors to the fair will be able to sample different varieties and vote for their favourite.
Coca, traditional to Javea and much of the Valencian Community, is believed by many to be the centuries-old origin of Italian pizza. It is said to have become popular there thanks to Jativa-born Alfonso de Borja – better-known as Borgia – who became Pope Calixtus III.
