Amateur divers catch illegal nets from Almuñecar sea bed

ILLEGAL NETS: Divers recovered illegal fishing nets abandoned on the sea bed.

VOLUNTEER divers have caught a haul of illegal fishing nets.

Swimming off the Punta de la Mona, Almuñecar, the divers from Malaga’s University Sub-Aquatic Activities Association and Natura Dive diving club, together with Scubasur of Almuñecar, found the abandoned nets on the sea bed.

During the Herradura town hall organised event a dozen divers scoured the sea floor.  They found the nets, measuring between four and seven metres, which were causing severe damage to the flora and fauna of the zone, according to Carlos Ferron, a specialist from the Environment Council.

Because of the size and weight of the nets a boat to transfer the divers and underwater scooters will have to be used to bring the rest of them ashore.
