Solemn 'mourning' for danger school in Rojales

SCHOOL FUNERAL: hundreds march through Rojales following 'death' of school.

THE community of Rojales marched in solemnity in mourning for their school. Parents, pupils and members of all political parties united as they held a mock funeral in the form of a protest through the town from the church to the cemetery.

It was organised by the AMPA parents association which is fighting for improvements to be made to the 43 year-old school.

They carried a ‘coffin’ through the streets as hundreds of people dressed in black calling for the Valencian authorities to take note and build a much needed new school to replace the Colegio Principe de España. They say it is in a serious state of disrepair.

The ‘obituary’ claimed the school has been “killed by the negligence of the authorities.”

President of AMPA, Soraya Fernandez, criticised the regional director of education Rafael Carbonell, who pledged in February to respond to their situation but so far, they are still waiting.  “We cannot continue like this” she said recalling that numerous pieces of the building had collapsed or fallen off,. On top of that the building has lead pipes, a sceptic tank and an outdated electrical system. “The Town Hall has been patching up the building for too many years.”

Parent Rachel King who took part in the protest march said: “To say the school is dilapidated is too kind, it is a dangerous death trap and a serious accident just waiting to happen.”
