Serena Williams
Reigning champion Serena Williams and former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova were among Tuesday’s second-round victors at the Madrid Open.
The top-seeded and world No. 1 Williams beat Spain’s Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-2, 7-5 on the clay courts. Dominguez Lino was a runner-up in Morocco just two weeks ago.
Williams, aged 31, has won her last 13 WTA matches and is seeking a third title in three events. She beat then-world No. 1 and reigning two-time runner-up Victoria Azarenka in last year’s Madrid finale.
Sharapova, seeded second at this WTA Premier Mandatory event, had little trouble in her second-round bout with Christina McHale, with the reigning French Open champion disposing of the American qualifier 6-1, 6-2 in just 66 minutes.
