YOUNG cast members of a recent show that raised cash for charity had a chance to meet the beneficiary of their generosity. The actors who featured in Bugsy Malone in March, came together again this week to make a presentation at the Allen Graham Charity Shop in Puerto Pollença.
The presentation was for a young man named Saliu. He came to Mallorca when he was 12-years-old. He had originally travelled from Senegal to The Canary Islands in a nine hour journey with 90 others.
Saliu explained: “In Senegal there are no rules, children do not have to go to school, and I didn’t realise that life would be so different in Spain.”
On arrival he was taken to a children’s home and went to school. Luckily at 18, he was offered an apartment with the Allen Graham Foundation, which paid for his studies and gave him a living allowance.
The Allen Graham foundation can only offer limited accommodation for over 18s. Nickie Baylis, who with Nicki Liles produced Bugsy Malone said: “We are delighted that Saliu now has such a bright future. The €600 that was donated by N2 productions today, following the production of Bugsy Malone, along with the €250 donated by NOMADS, will ensure that Saliu is able to learn to drive.
“This is a valuable life skill that will improve his chances of finding work when he has finished his studies”.
