Smash and grab raid on Selfridges, Oxford Street, London

A 29 year old Egyptian student, Mohammed Hussein has been praised by police for chasing and tackling one of the men involved in a spectacular smash and grab raid at Selfridges in Oxford Street, London, last night.

Six men disguised as rich Saudi women wearing the traditional black Niquabs and carrying ‘designer’ handbags suddenly began to smash glass display cabinets inside the store with axes and grabbed jewellery and watches.

Shocked shoppers watched as the men stuffed bags and backpacks with the expensive haul and made their getaway on motorbikes that were waiting for them with accomplices outside. One of the scooters crashed and Mr. Hussein ran out from the pizza restaurant where he works and with the aid of some other men restrained the man until police arrived.

One suspect is being held for questioning and another is in hospital with a suspected broken leg.

Later two motor bikes were recovered in the Paddington area. The value of the watches stolen has not been confirmed yet. Officers from the Flying Squad praised the public for their help and said the raid was a brazen and well planned robbery in a busy store.
