LIFESAVERS have been in Benalmadena to be trained in special methods of using dogs to detect disaster victims. As culmination of a month long course in learning the Arcon method, invented by a Sevilla firefighter, a volunteer was buried under a mountain of soil to run rescue dogs through their paces one by one.
In all cases the dogs found the ‘victim,’ who breathed through a PVC tube, within a minute. But this method is not only to rescue people. “Dogs can also detect explosives and landmines. Dogs can find anything that releases a smell,” explained Jaime Parejo, who invented the system in response to natural disasters world wide.
