THE fishing industry has been urged to “fish better, not to fish more.”
This could be achieved by diversifying into the tourism sector, suggested Jesus Caicedo, an MP for Almeria in the national parliament.
His proposal requesting the central government to examine the possibility was supported by all parties with the exception of the PSOE socialists.
Turning working boats into occasional pleasure boats would benefit the growing demand to “rediscover the environmental values and cultural tradition of our coastline,” Caicedo said.
Combining fishing and tourist activities would require careful planning and need to comply with health and safety regulations. Special insurance would be needed, he pointed out.
A similar proposal was put forward by the PP in 2005 and backed by all parties apart from the PSOE which was then in power, Caicedo reminded the chamber. The initiative foundered after the then government failed to address problems holding up the project.
