95 years-old today and Nelson Mandela is spending his birthday in hospital recovering from a lung infection.
Events are taking place around the world in his honour as well as in South Africa.
South Africans are being urged to mark this special occasion by taking 67 minutes to do charitable acts marking Mandela’s 67 years of public service.
Nelson Mandela is in a critical but stable condition after entering hospital June 8. President Jacob Zuma has come out saying that Mandela’s health was “steadily improving”.
“We are proud to call this international icon our own as South Africans and wish him good health,” Mr Zuma said in the statement.
“We thank all our people for supporting Madiba throughout the hospitalisation with undying love and compassion,” he said, referring to Mandela’s clan name.
