TWO teenage girls, aged 13 and 14, drowned yesterday in the Valmayor reservoir in Madrid.
The victims were reported to have been sitting on the shore of the reservoir and spending the day out with their families when they were dragged into the water by the current.
The two sadly didn’t survive despite efforts from the brother of one of the girls’ to save them, according to sources.
A rescue operation was launched shortly after the victims’ families called the 112 emergency service and four helicopters as well as several boats were issued in the operation to locate the bodies of the two victims.
When they were found, the Spanish Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) reported that the victims had been dragged 25 metres into the reservoir and then trapped in an 8 meter deep abyss.
According to figures released by the Spanish Civil Guard 113 have people have drowned in Spain so far this year.
