A submarine car used by James Bond in The Spy Who Loved Me has been auctioned in London for £550,000 (€643,500).

The Lotus Esprit, also known as Wet Nellie, was used in an underwater scene in which agent 007, played by Roger Moore, escapes with Russian spy Ana Amasova, actress Barbara Bach.

Although the auctioned vehicle cannot be driven on the road, it is said to be fully functional underwater.

The car was bought by a telephone bidder for £550,000 (€643,500), a lower figure than the initially estimated price of between £650,000 and £950,000 (€760.000 and €1.111.500).

Classic car auction company RM Auctions representative Peter Haynes claimed to be very happy.
