CLANDESTINE marihuana plantations have become a regular Alicante province news feature.
It was recently Benissa’s turn following the arrest of a 35-year-old Spanish man.
The Guardia Civil seized more than 300 marihuana plants camouflaged with green netting at his property in the rural Pinos area.
This ruse was not enough to deceive investigators who only days before had confiscated marihuana plants grown inside the town itself.
Illicit plantations are proliferating in the Marina Alta as well as on the coast and in inland areas.
In the last six months investigators have located indoor and exterior ‘nurseries’ in Javea as well as Benitachell’s Poble Nou.
They all pall into significance beside the Lliber discovery last year. Here Guardia Civil officers discovered 10,000 marihuana plants growing in 16 polytunnels– the largest plantation ever found in Europe.
