Weligton: “Malaga CF is in my heart”

Weligton Robson de Oliveira held this morning’s press conference at La Rosaleda, following his contract renewal with Malaga CF. The ‘Malaguista’ was very grateful for Antonio Benitez’s words, describing the centre forward as a “true icon of Malaga”. Weligton was also pleased the Club vice president, Moayad Shatat was present on “such an important day”, and thanked Club officials, “for continuing to put their faith in me.

Weligton recalls his arrival at Malaga: “I had no idea what it would be like, neither the club nor the city, and it was a very pleasant surprise.  Since then I’ve had some amazing experiences and I’m over the moon to be here.”

The ‘Malaguista’ looks to the future: “I want to enjoy every season and every match as if it were the last.  I know I haven’t got that much time left in my career, and I’d love to stay here as this club will always be in my heart.”

Weligton has a special stand-out memory from his seven seasons with Malaga: “When we were promoted to the First Division, I walked into the dressing room and saw people that have been at this Club all their lives crying their eyes out with joy.” Weligton adds: “Every moment here has its magic.”

As Blue and Whites’ captain, the centre forward talks about his relationship with the Club: “We have a really friendly relationship, rather than a company-employee relationship.  The Club is now more solid than ever.”  With regards to the team’s objectives, Weligton affirms: “We’re determined to return to European positions, and from a personal point of view I’m aiming to continue improving as much as I can.  We’ve got a lot more to win than we have to lose.”

The ‘Malaguista’ talks about competition for his position as centre forward within the squad: “I think healthy competition is always beneficial, both for me and the Club.  Every season I often get labelled as a substitute, but I make sure I prove otherwise on the pitch.  I’ll keep working with humility and determination, so I can be as strong as possible for the team.”
