BARS, restaurants, hotels and other catering services will no longer be able to offer clients refillable oil bottles from January 1, 2014.
According to new rules approved by the Cabinet within Plan of Action in the EU Olive Oil Sector, oil given to clients must be in labelled packaging or bottles. The containers must have opening systems which is broken upon the first use as well as others to prevent them from being refilled.
Oils which they have already purchased which do not comply with the new rules can be given to clients until February 28, 2014.
Similar rules, to guarantee the quality and authenticity of the oils served are already in place in Italy and Portugal. They also aim to improve the image of the product while informing clients of its characteristics.
