Waterport power station ablaze
Thousands of tourists and residents were left without power while firefighters battled the blaze.
A huge fire in Gibraltar’s Waterport power station has left most of the rock without electricity.
Police have evacuated residences near the fire, which broke out at around 1pm, at Gibraltar’s main power station.
A Gibraltar Government spokesman has commented “The fire is under control and there are no casualties.
Engineers are going into the power station to assess the situation as soon as they are given the go ahead to do so and try to start reconnecting the power supply again”
Police investigators have ruled out foul play and initial investigations point to a generator catching fire and exploding due to mechanical failure.
