Updated: According to reports F1 star Michael Schumacher is waking from his coma – but these reports have been largely refuted.

Widespread reports yesterday (Friday) indicated that F1 champion Michael Schumacher, who has been in a medically-induced coma since December 29 after a Meribel French Alps resort skiing accident, woke up.

Sources said that the seven times world champion woke from his coma and recognised his wife Corinna.

Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm was said to have told local journalists at Grenoble University Hospital that the former Formula 1 champion is in a complicated process of recovery, alternating between states of consciousness and sleep.

Kehm allegedly told media outlet RTL: “There are moments, as I’ve said, of consciousness, and this is very good news.”

Kehm said she could not elaborate further for fear of breaching Schumacher’s privacy.

Meanwhile, Formula 1 journalist Nicola Pohl denied the reports on Twitter after the news was released.

It is not yet clear if there is any basis of truth for the update.
