The ship is being held at Valencia port.
A ship which spilt fuel has been immobilised in the port of Valencia.
The fuel spill has closed local beaches including El Saler and La Devesa, the fine imposed could reach €400,000.
The broken down ship which arrived in the port of Valencia spilt fuel that left a 1,8 kilometre stain 300 metres wide.
The ship will continue in the port while investigations are carried out and could be asked for a bank guarantee to ensure payment if there is a fine imposed.
The fine, which could be as much as €400,000, would cover the cleanup costs of the beaches and the sea water.
The MSC ship readily admitted the breakdown and has cooperated with marine authorities in all matters.
As yet the extent of the damage to the environment is not known.
