Yago Lamela has been found dead at his home.
Former Spanish athlete Yago Lamela has been found dead at his home in northern Spain.
Former long-jumper Lamela, 36, won silver at the 1999 World Championship in Seville and came second at the Japan Maebashi Olympics.
Lamela was the European record holder for 10 years with his 8.56 metres Maebashi jump.
His successful career was brought to a standstill when he began to suffer from Achilles tendon injuries.
The problem prevented Lamela from competing at 2004 Athens Olympics before forcing his eventual retirement in 2009 after failed surgeries.
Following his retirement Lamala was prone to bouts of depression and was hospitalised in 2011 for psychiatric problems.
