A DEVASTATING fire on Eastbourne Pier is being treated as possible arson by Sussex police.
They have stated that there is evidence that clearly shows it was either ‘deliberately or accidently’ started by a person unknown. It is too early to say if it was definitely arson.
The fire had begun in the arcade of the famous pier and at its most potent needed 80 fire-fighters to try and bring the blaze under control.
British Prime Minister David Cameron has visited the pier with the Chancellor George Osbourne with a pledge of £2 million (€2.508) in order to help the town rebuild the damaged pier. Sadly this is not the first pier to suffer fire damage in recent years, with Brighton enduring a similar fate.
The police plan to use the public to help find out how the flames began by asking for any video or photographic evidence from the time it started. The fire was only put out at 8pm following a heroic effort by the fire service.
