Xavi and Alonso still in the picture

Vincente Del Bosque this week has maintained that two midfield stalwarts of the Spanish national team will be very much in the picture for Euro 2016 assuming they keep in good form.

Both players were criticised for their performances during the World Cup this summer as the defending champions exited at the group stages. However Del Bosque, who guided ‘La Roja’ to the Euro 2012 title, will stay in charge and despite calls for team renovation has not ruled out letting some of the more senior players disappear from national duty.

He has said that if the two veterans could show what they are capable of this coming season then it would be very possible to see them winning more caps. Xavi played for Barcelona this past year quite well although some critics saw a dip in his level and will continue for the Catalan giants in the 2014-15 season. The same applies for Xabi Alonso who was instrumental in Real Madrid´s triumph in the Champion’s League final.

Del Bosque did however have a slight worry about some of the Young Spanish players especially as La Liga is drawing more and more foreigners due to the improvement within the league. This summer has seen the likes of James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos and Marc Andre ter-Stegen moving to the Spanish league. However this shouldn’t worry the national team with a large pool of talent to choose from still playing regular team football in Spain or abroad.

The first month or two will be important for the two Spanish legends with the Spanish national team playing friendlies in September against France and Macedonia, however, only time will tell.
