Train derails in Manila

Many people have been injured in an incident involving a train derailing and hitting a concrete barrier in a train station in the Philippine capital of Manila.

The defective train was being pushed by another with people trapped inside due to there being no electrical power. It then crashed into the Taft station after smashing into an electrical post just before arriving at the station and fell onto the street.

Reportedly 28 people have been injured and rushed to hospital with service being stopped on the MRT lines for a period of time. MRT resumed their operation at 5pm local time.

MRT spokesperson Hernando Cabrera has explained that the incident was caused by “technical problems.”

“Derailed MRT train at Pasay-Taft Station. MMDA Rescue and enforcers on location. Expect heavy traffic,” was the message shown on Twitter from the MMDA.
