Workers injured in hotel lift fall

FOUR hotel workers have been injured by a cargo lift failing and falling from the first floor of the hotel where they worked to the ground floor – a distance of around one and a half metres.

The incident took place in an aparthotel in Calpe, Alicante.

Of the four wounded, two have broken legs and the other two have severe sprained ankles.

There were nine hotel workers in the cargo lift at the time of the accident, all of them cleaning staff, the other five workers were attended to by medical personnel at the scene but were not badly injured having only a few bruises.

According to the Calpe fire brigade the cause of the accident is clear – the cargo lift was certified for six people and could not take the weight of nine people and the cleaning trolleys.

The lift fell the one and a half metres but not a free fall as the emergency brakes came on in time to slow the drop a little before it hit the ground.
