The town of Almáchar in Malaga is gearing up to host its annual fiesta del ajoblanco this weekend.

For the uninitiated, ajoblanco is a delicacy of the region, and the ajoblancoof Almáchar is considered so good that they hold a festival dedicated to this cold soup every year.

Sometimes nicknamed ‘white gazpacho,’ ajoblanco is in fact a dish in itself. Don’t be put off by the literal translation of the dish (white garlic) for when made well, the soup is smooth and the crushed almonds that form the basis of the dish make for a delicious and unforgettable gastronomic experience.

The fiesta will begin at 5pm on Saturday September 6 when visitors will be able to try the traditional ajoblanco dish which characterises the town. Other local delicacies will also be on offer, including grapes, raisins and Moscatel wine.

There will also be musical events in the evening in Plaza España from 10pm. Groups and choirs are set to perform, including traditional flamencoand verdiales music.

After 11pm, revellers will congregate in the Paseo de la Axarquía for a night of tapas and sangria. As always, Almáchar’s unique fiesta del ajoblanco should not be missed!
