Happy birthday Morrisons – the best value in Gibraltar for over 20 years

CELEBRATING: Morrisons’ staff, suppliers and distinguished guests.

IT is a big happy birthday to Morrisons at Westside as it celebrates its 20th year of trading.

The company has actually been serving the community since 1908, previously as Safeway, Presto and Liptons.

And as thousands of happy customers in Gibraltar and along the Costa del Sol can testify, the company has always been the number one destination for food shopping in Gibraltar.

It has been so successful over time that the investment in a superstore was made 20 years ago.

It is the only Morrisons store outside Britain and has gone from success to success to become the jewel in the crown for the company.

To celebrate the store’s birthday, a reception was held at the floating Sunborn Hotel. Among the guests were the Governor, the Chief Minister, many of the store’s suppliers and 40 of the staff who also celebrated having worked at the store for all of those 20 years.

The store got a special mention from director Martyn Jones at the reception for its involvement in the local community. And it is that involvement which has seen the Gibraltar store take the mantle as the company’s highest fundraising store for charity. In its three-year partnership with Save the Children, a superb £150,000 has been raised – something all of Gibraltar can be proud of.

Now the caring store has been raising money for the Cancer Relief Society and made a presentation of £3,000 to them on its birthday night.

The store is primarily shopped at by Gibraltarians but is also a destination for expats, tourists and yachts. The reason? Customers know they will get the same great selection and value for money as they do back in the UK.

About 80 per cent of the store’s goods come from the UK and the rest from suppliers in Gibraltar. The UK stock comes down by lorry from Kent. It takes two drivers and three days for the stock to arrive in Gibraltar and at any one time there may be up to 18 lorries on the road.

The range is nearly the same as a store in Britain, which is why it has become a welcome shopping trip for expats who can find all of their home comforts at hand like PG tips, Heinz baked beans, Marmite, bacon – the list is endless…

The store does have its points of difference though; for example, it’s the only Morrisons with a bar – so you can get a glass of wine with your freshly cooked fish and chips in the store café!

As part of the store’s celebration this summer, there are an extra special number of great promotions in store.
