A WOMAN has been taken into custody in South London after the death of a five-month-old baby girl.

Scotland Yard are holding the 26-year-old on suspicion of neglect at a police station in the area.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) was called to the house around 7.15am on Wednesday morning after reports of an unresponsive baby in a house on the Glastonbury Road in Morden.

A spokeswoman for the LAS said two ambulances arrived to find the baby in cardiac arrest. The baby was taken to St Hellier Hospital in Carshalton but later died.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said officers were called to the house by the LAS shortly after paramedics arrived. “We know the identity of the child and next of kin have been informed. A post-mortem will be held in due course. The incident is being treated as suspicious.” She added that “Officers from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command are investigating.”

The baby has been identified and the next of kin have been informed.
